I’ve been on a huge Lord of the Rings kick lately and the LEGO game franchise was having a steam sale so I picked up both the Lord of the Rings game and The Hobbit. I’ve only played the LotR one so far, but it’s a ton of fun. I’ve heard that the LEGO games are just a ton of fun but I was never interested because I though the medium was a little goofy. I wasn’t wrong about them being goofy, because they definitely are, but the key to them is that you can’t look at them like you would a more standard version of a LotR game like War in the North or the Return of the King. The LEGO version is blocky and comical, but still has very serious elements of game-play. You unlock characters and weapons with unique abilities, and some of the mechanical puzzles or fights are actually tough. I thought this would be a game for children but I think eight-year old me would have had some difficulties with this game. Watching how the movies have been adapted into LEGO scenes is also pretty amusing, especially because I grew up playing with LEGOs, i recognize a lot of the blocks they use to build the game. I have only logged about 2 hours into the LEGO Lord of the Rings but I am interested in hearing what people have to say about these games, I know they have been highly rated and I just want to know if they are worth completing.
