Firefly the Video Game

Firstly: FIREFLY HAS A VIDEO GAME! IT’S AN MMO BUT IT’S A VIDEO GAME! THE SERIES IS NOT DEAD (not alive, but not dead)

Now that that is out of the way, I’ll explain. Firefly was a very fun and semi-progressive / semi-problematic “western science fiction” (cowboys in space) television series that came out in 2002 and was canceled in 2002. It got to have one season and then, because it was canceled despite being fairly popular, it got to have a movie (Serenity) to [sort of] wrap things up.

During the series (and movie, of course), you follow a crew of nine people on a space ship. They all come from different backgrounds (an official “Companion”- a government trained sex and sensuality worker, a preacher, some rebels, and more) and all have different motives for staying together. Much of the plot is derived from them fighting against the Alliance, the government, and generally being mercenaries. Because of its depressingly short run (14 episodes), fan theories about what the over-arching plots and never-explained characters are widespread and all entirely plausible.

That short run also ensured that they would have a dedicated, though small, fanbase and has led to many jokes about canceling television shows (go watch anything with Nathan Fillion in it- he always finds a way to complain about it). It’s largely regarded as a cult classic and, should the series ever be restarted (a la Doctor Who), it’d top the charts immediately.

And it’s going to have an MMO. Starring the cast as voice overs for the Big Damn Heroes (the main characters).

You get to play as a captain of your very own ship, exploring the ‘Verse, and doing jobs here and there. And sometimes, you get to team up with the BDH.

It’s going to be on Steam and available to both PCs and Macs (other consoles pending). It’s projected to be coming out Spring 2015.

So, I have to ask- any other Browncoats out there? I’m super excited, even though MMOs aren’t exactly my cup of tea, because the lack of closure on that particular tale makes my completionist-explorer side twitchy.

  1. I too do not care for MMOs but this being Firefly changes everything. Thank you for spreading the good news (I’m actually disappointed I hadn’t heard about this elsewhere)!!

  2. This is great! Would your crew interact enough with Serenity to explore more of their storyline or will they just throw in a few nuggets for the fans? The game would be a great opportunity to do the former, but I’m afraid the the latter will win out.
