So, here’s my compilation of comments and whatnot that I’ve gathered from many corners of the internet.
Also, my faith in humanity is now held by a string of fairy dust atoms all holding hands.
Also-also: I don’t know how my fellow researchers are doing, but I’ve found about nothing on racial identities in gaming culture. Just in case you kids also couldn’t get much, it might be fun to do a limited identity randomizer thing (like feminist / not feminist, male born / female born) and then from there you make a choice (I dunno, you go online to check out comic or you go on Tumblr to check out the fandom or you go to a con or what-have-you) and for cases where we have multiple resources on “gaming culture’s” reactions, there’s another randomizer that decides what situation you’re put in. Like, if you’re going online to a forum, you could see a thread about GamerGate or someone asking a question or you’ve got a message of some variety.
But anyways, here’s what I’ve got (all links open to another window as usual). Also, the pictures occasionally do as well. Best of luck navigating this.
“Misogynerds“- an evolution of “gross nerd”–> label assigned to misogynistic gamers.
“What’s the worst (or best) insult you’ve gotten for being a girl in online gaming?” : ((the pics here that open to other links are mentioned in the thread so I clicked them))
“Not in the Kitchen Anymore” ((RMP = Random Male Player))
This one is too long to post, but is a fun read. Also, terrifying. Facebook searching strangers is 0% okay, friends.
There’s more. There’s so much more. I actually got bored scrolling through various RMPs want oral sex from her. Go to the website. Cry about humanity.
Control Alt Delete comics–> mainly about general nerdom, but a lot of gaming stuff too. Also, you only get most of the comic, because they’re inconveniently long. Click the pic and it’ll take you to the page. Probably.
Alright, I’m done screenshotting these (because it gets too long). Next (after groping), she visits to invite Ethan to a party and he slams the door in her face. Other boy who’s name I forgot (not Ethan) forces him to apologize (by kidnapping his video card). Then Ethan (off screen) plays soul calibar with her (and is thrown through the floor ((she lives in the apartment above them))). Then here he writes her a love note because he realizes he loves her. It doesn’t seem to go anywhere.
Last one from CAD because I sick of it.
This whole thing here is about one woman (specifically someone married to another woman with a daughter; ergo, an adult queer woman with her family) and her experience with a man who to her face told her she wasn’t a gamer.
Here’s an article on one woman who has banned the use of headsets in her house because she doesn’t want her daughter growing up with the kind of vitrol that we’ve been talking about.
This is a really interesting reddit thread discussing girl-on-girl sexist violence and internalized misogyny. Dunno if it’s relevant, but could probably have some neat quotes.
Alright, I have official hit my limit on tolerance, so here’s a bunch of links my redditor buddy gave me
