First impressions of “The Quarter”

This was my first time going to an arcade and I have to say it was pretty cool. I didn’t know what to expect so I went without any expectations. This resulted in everything being a surprise for me.

The first thing I noticed was how dark the arcade room was. I could barely make out the faces of people across the room. I’m assuming that the dim lighting serves to make it easier to see the game screens. However, it also made it harder to interact with the other people in the arcade, indicating that the arcade is place to go if you want to escape human interactions. This functions to strengthen the stereotype that gamers are mostly introverts. This surprised me because I had always thought that the arcade was a place where people went to hang out with their friends and socialize. I can see it being a nice place for couples to go to since they can basically do what they want without worrying about being noticed by others.

The next thing I noticed is that the games didn’t have any sound. Most of the sound just came from the music playing in the background and the players playing the games. This was kind of disappointing for me because the sound adds something special to the game and without this sound, it felt as though something was missing. All of the depictions of arcades that I’ve seen in movies (Tron for example), the games had sounds. Nevertheless, the background music was still pretty enjoyable.

In conclusion, I thoroughly enjoyed the field trip to the arcade and I’m gratefully to this class for allowing me to have such an amazing experience. Feel free to share your own thoughts about the arcade.
